Abortion Access Info – PEI


If you are thinking of terminating your pregnancy, here is the information you will need.

The Canada Health Act states that everyone in Canada should have access to necessary health services, including abortion. Abortion is a safe and legal service.

The Province of Prince Edward Island will pay for abortions done at a hospital but not at a private clinic.

There are no abortion facilities on PEI. Island women usually travel to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

PEI Doctor Referral
Some doctors in PEI may refuse to provide a referral. The Termination of Pregnancy Unit will provide the name of an Island doctor who is willing to provide a referral.
