Call for Proposals for a Commission

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women is seeking to commission an original work of visual art appropriate for display at the 30th anniversary service in memory of the Montreal Massacre at the Ecole Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. The Council invites artists to submit a proposal for a work that would be complete and prepared for display on December 6, 2019.

The piece of art selected will respond visually to the theme of violence against women. Preference will be given to a piece of art that also responds to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

Preference will be given to artists who identify as women, two-spirited, or non-binary and to Indigenous artists. Artists who do not identify as women/two-spirited/non-binary or Indigenous should make clear in their proposal how they would position their identity in relation to their artwork and should clearly indicate how they would ensure they would avoid cultural appropriation.

Project specifications:
Medium: Proposals for visual art works in any media will be considered.
Display: Work should be appropriate for display either on a wall/easel or free-standing on a table/floor.
Portability: Dimensions and/or weight should be within range for portability in a passenger vehicle and/or lifting by no more than two people.

Submissions must be sent by midnight September 2, 2019, by email to (Note: Deadline extended since first posted.)

Submissions must include:

  1. Current CV (maximum three pages)
  2. Detailed artwork proposal
  3. A timeline for completing the project
  4. A maximum of 3 images attached or links to online images of past work

Submissions will be juried. The artist who makes a successful proposal will receive $1,000, inclusive of all personal expenses, materials, and supplies.

The commissioned artwork will become part of the collection of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Opportunities for public exhibit and reproduction will be negotiated.
