4.  PEI Women Writers’ Write the Day September 15, 2012, Canoe Cove

On September 15, 2012 the PEI Women Writers Write the Day will encourage, awaken, support, and engage your creativity. Attendees will be offered their choice of two out of six (6) unique writing workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Write the Day takes the place of the PEI Women Writers’ Bootcamp weekend. It is now a fabulous one-day experience, at the same location in Canoe Cove, with a lower registration fee enabling even more writers to participate. We are able to offer full scholarships to young women aged 15-25 and subsidies for low or fixed-income women. The cost for a full day of events is as reasonable as we can make it, at $30.00 for two workshops, lunch, snacks, and an open mic opportunity at the end of the event.

The beautiful setting of Canoe Cove Camp will be sure to nourish your writer’s soul, and the time to focus on your writing, away from home and your regular day-to-day, is what this day is all about. Perhaps you’ve been writing for many years, or maybe you need a gentle push off the procrastinator’s couch. Whether you are a novice or established author, come and experience a wonderful day in the company of other women writers.

You’ll have the opportunity to take workshops from an amazing line-up of writing talent: Laurie Brinklow, Margie Carmichael, Kathleen Hamilton, Beth Janzen, Margot Maddison-MacFadyen, and Liza Oliver.

To register for Write the Day and for more information including facilitator bios and workshop descriptions, please check out the website at peiwomenwriters.com, call Susan at 437-3134, or email eveningprimrose@xplornet.com.

Space is limited and booking has already begun. Reserve your space soon, especially you young women out there who want to apply for a scholarship.

5.  Newcomer and Established Island Seniors Learn New Skills, and Create Friendships

The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada (PEI ANC), the Seniors Active Living Centre, and the Murphy’s Community Centre have partnered to promote the social inclusion of immigrant and established Island seniors through the Seniors Connecting Across Cultures project. A series of eight hands-on workshops, each consisting of eight sessions (taught by seniors where possible), will provide the opportunity for people 50 + to learn a skill or hobby, spend social time together, exchange cultural knowledge, and make connections. The project is hoped to build a more dynamic, diverse network of seniors in PEI.

Taking into consideration potential language barriers, these free workshops are designed around demonstration and action — learning a skill or hobby — so that newcomer seniors can participate in activities regardless of their current level of English. Interpreters representing all the languages required will be present for at least the first session of each workshop to explain any key workshop elements. Some workshops have a participant limit but there is no special equipment or experience necessary. Anyone 50 years of age or older can sign up for as many activities as they wish, and all sessions are free.

Topics are:

  • Eight Nights of Games
  • Using a Video Camera
  • International Cooking
  • Practical Digital Photography
  • Rug Hooking and Knitting
  • Voices Together Choral Singing
  • Line Dancing
  • Visual Arts

The workshops will be offered from September 2012 to May 2013. The first two are: “Eight Nights of Games” which will take place at Seniors Active Living Centre on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm beginning Sept. 12th (no limit to number of participants, but you must pre-register), and “Learning to Use a Video Camera” which will take place at the Murphy’s Community Centre on Thursdays from 4:30 – 6:30pm beginning on September 13th (a limited number of participants so reserve your space soon). The organizers are also looking for seniors willing to share their skills and talents as instructors or facilitators—an honorarium will be offered.

As details are finalized on the remaining workshops, information on each will be posted on the PEI ANC website at peianc.com under Things to Do, and on PEI ANC’s Facebook page. For further information, or to register, please contact the Seniors Active Living Centre at  (902) 628-8388, or salc@pei.aibn.com.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program.

“What a Chocolate Bar Taught Me About
Negotiating as a Woman in Business!”
Presented by: Michele Dorsey, Michele Dorsey Law

In her early years as a labour relations negotiator, lawyer Michele Dorsey found herself in a downtown office deadlocked in mediation in a workplace dispute.  Taking a break, she left the room to get a chocolate bar from the vending machine.  What happened next launched her on a mission to help business people – especially women in business — understand the importance of key negotiating skills in order to be more effective and successful.

Michele Dorsey is a highly regarded leader in the field of human resources, labour relations and workplace solutions. Dorsey explains that whether you are negotiating with your clients, your staff, the terms of a new lease or better financial rates at the bank, every businesswoman can benefit by learning fundamental negotiating skills – skills that women have traditionally shied away from in a formerly male-dominated culture.
