1.  Bonshaw Ceilidh August 26th

The monthly Ceilidh Concert at the beautiful Bonshaw Hall will be Sunday, August 26th from 7-9 pm. Featured performers are fiddler Allison Giggey, singers Karen and Madeleine McCannell, harpist Lana Quinn with guitarist Byron Olsen, and step-dancers Jayde Inman and Sydney Wheatley; plus local musicians.There will also be a 50/50 draw, delicious biscuits for lunch, and open stage time. 2.  PEI Business Women’s Association Announcement

The board of PEI Business Women’s Association is pleased to welcome Hannah Bell as the Executive Director, effective September 4, 2012.  Hannah is an accomplished business woman with over 20 years of experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as successfully running her own consultancy business.  She holds an MBA in Innovative Management from UPEI and is an active volunteer within the community, including the recent ‘Start Up Challenge’ for Island entrepreneurs.  Hannah believes strongly in the value of networks, mentors, and education to provide women with opportunities for both professional and personal growth.

We are thrilled to have Hannah on the PEIBWA team, and look forward to a long and dynamic partnership with her as she works to strengthen the Association’s mission: to empower and inspire women to succeed in their business endeavours by providing support, education and opportunities to connect with other women in business.

1. Young Women Lead the Way at the Atlantic Summer Institute

A new generation of young leaders is descending upon Charlottetown this August for the Atlantic Summer Institute’s Young Women and Community Leadership Program, August 21 to 24, at Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI.

The Atlantic Summer Institute theme this year is “Inspiration to Action: Leadership for Active Communities.” As a new dimension of the ASI, the young women’s program will help women aged 18-25 take on a greater leadership role in their communities, making Atlantic Canada stronger, healthier, and more vibrant.

Megan Stewart, Youth Engagement Coordinator for the Atlantic Summer Institute, has been finalizing the program developed by and for young women in Atlantic Canada. “The program is shaping up to be an exciting four days of leadership training, creativity, and collaboration. We have a diverse group of young women already registered, and are reaching out to young Island women to participate in this unique learning opportunity.”

Through an engaging, experiential program, young women will develop new leadership ideas and skills, create plans for how they can make a difference in their communities, and expand their network of friends and supporters who can help them turn their ideas into realities. Participants will attend workshops covering topics such as Sex and Gender‐based Analysis, creating a vision plan, and gathering the resources to act on it. They will work together to develop new projects for their communities, and will create a collaborative zine to share their experiences and to use as a resource in their future leadership work.

The young women will also have the opportunity to discover new ways to stay active. The Charlottetown Running Room will host a clinic on motivation and exercise, Moksha Yoga will lead an outdoor yoga class ; a ZUMBA class and a Nordic Walking workshop will also be offered.

Recruitment is now taking place to gather young women from all four Atlantic Provinces. Emerging and established young women leaders between the ages of 18 to 25 are invited to register for this unique leadership program.

Funding is still available for participants from PEI . Potential participants should register as soon as possible to secure their place.

3. Legal Issues of Aging Course

Legal Issues of Aging
September 25 – October 30, 2012
Tuesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30pm

This course is designed to address the legal issues of aging, for those preparing for retirement, already in retirement, and for those who care for seniors. The class will become familiar with estate planning tools such as wills, trusts, enduring powers of attorney and advanced health care directives and learn what they are, why they are important, and how they function. Students will learn the legal process of estate administration and what the executor of an estate is expected to do. Other topics will include pensions, benefits and services for seniors, elder abuse, age discrimination and where to find help with these issues.

4 . Macphail Homestead Writing Workshops for Children and for Adults

The Macphail Homestead in Orwell will host a series of four writing workshops for adults and for children in August facilitated by writer, poet, and children’s author Deirdre Kessler.

Participants will complete writing exercises that call on them to create fiction, nonfiction, life writing, and poetry on the spot. Weather permitting, some of the workshop will be held outdoors and some of it in the Macphail Woods Ecological Project Nature Centre or in the Great Room of the Macphail house.

See how fiction, poetry, and life writing can begin with a sense of place and with close observation of the natural world. Even imaginative writing or fantasy most often begins with geography, with landscape, with real flora and real fauna. Through timed exercises developed by an accomplished teacher, participants will write short pieces in a number of genres as they explore nature and their response to it during the workshop.

Writers at all levels of experience are welcome. Supplies needed: notebook and pencil, non-disposable water bottle, and bug repellent if bugs are a bother.

Writing Workshops for children ages 10-12 will be held Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, on August 18 and August 25, 2012.

Writing workshops for adults will be held Saturday afternoons, 1:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., August 18 and August 25. The cost for children’s writing workshops is $20 ($30 for two members of same family); the cost for adults is $40. To reserve a space, contact Deirdre Kessler:

5. Taste Our Island Award 2012

Nominations are now open for the ADAPT Council 6th Annual Taste Our Island award. This prestigious and sought after award recognizes the province’s best innovative chefs and restaurateurs who are supporting Prince Edward Island’s local food system.

Prince Edward Island’s bountiful and delicious harvest is part of what defines its land, heritage, and culture. Supporting local food strengthens the local economy and ensures a secure source of high quality produce.

Everyone is encouraged to help by nominating someone whose outstanding culinary talents they admire. The nominee should be someone who has built effective relationships with farmers, wholesalers and distributors in order to help sustain a regional agricultural food system in new, innovative and effective ways.

The winner and runner-up awards will be presented at the Taste Our Island Roving Feast during the Fall Flavours celebration in late September. Last year’s winner, Barb Jabbour of Papa Joes in Charlottetown, along with a committee of food aficionados, will evaluate incoming nominations and select the 2012 winners.

The Taste Our Island award is an extremely valuable prize. The winner receives a full-page feature article in the 2013 PEI Tourism Guidebook valued at $8,000, and the beautiful “Taste Our Island” commemorative handcrafted plate, courtesy of Victoria’s Glass. The four runners-up will also be highlighted on the Tourism Guidebook page. In addition, the ADAPT Council will give special recognition to all restaurants that receive valid nominations by offering a uniquely designed decal that will identify the establishment as a ‘Taste Our Island’ Restaurant.

The criteria for the award looks not only for top-notch cuisine, but, at how supportive the chef/restaurant is in promoting a local, sustainable food system. Each nominee is judged on the percentage of Island foods included on menus, and how creatively the local foods initiative is profiled there. They are also evaluated on how well the use of local foods is advertised and promoted in general to customers.

Anyone who knows a chef or restaurant that meets the above description can submit a nomination by visiting the ADAPT website at, or find a Taste Our Island nomination form at various restaurants and locations around the Island this summer.
