1.   PEI Coalition for Women in Government Networking Workshop and New Year’s Levee!

The PEI Coalition for Women in Government invites you to attend a short networking workshop followed by a new year’s levee on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at St. Peter’s Hall, All Souls’ Lane, Charlottetown at 4:30 pm.

Kerry Anne MacDougall and Dawn Binns of Insight Marketing will present some fun and interactive activities to facilitate networking.

There is no charge to attend but please register to sandy@womeningovernmentpei.ca

The workshop will be followed immediately by a new year’s levee drop-in, from 5 – 6:30 pm. If you can’t make it to the workshop feel free to drop in to the levee. Refreshments will be served.

The Coalition is a multi-partisan coalition of individuals and organizations committed to increasing women’s opportunities to be elected to government in PEI.

2.  Seeking PEI Focus Group Participants

Over the last 12 months, have there been times when you and other household members did not have enough to eat?

If so, and you are a woman and have experienced weight challenges, we would like to invite you to share your experiences as part of our research project. We will be conducting group discussions with women, aged 18 and older, to learn about your experiences and understandings around times when you worried about not having enough to eat or actually did not have enough to eat, and weight challenges you faced as well as issues with chronic diseases. Group discussions will be taking place in communities across Atlantic Canada.

You will receive an honorarium for your participation. In addition, you will be reimbursed up to a limited amount for childcare, parking fees, and/or travel costs if you are taking a bus or taxi.

Group discussions will be taking place in Prince Edward Island:

3.  Volunteer Board Development Workshop Series

A series of workshops are being held across Prince Edward Island to assist volunteer groups with the challenges and rewards of volunteering on a board. Attendees will gain knowledge, a set of resources and examples to improve their own volunteer board. Three topics have been identified:

·      Basic Roles and Responsibilities – Session 1
·      Effective Board Meetings – Session 2
·      Recruitment and Retention – Session 3

The workshops are designed to be attended in sequence for maximum benefit however workshops maybe attended based on choice of topic.

Who should attend?
Anyone who serves on or works with a nonprofit board and would like to be more effective as a volunteer should attend the workshops.

Where are the workshops being held?
The three workshops will be held in the West, Central and Eastern regions of PEI. French workshops will be held in the area requested.

When are the workshops being held?
All sessions are being held in the evening hours from 6-9 pm on the following dates:

ProfitLearn PEI and the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce are hosting the series “STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS”. This program for new and emerging business owners, consists of  three evening and three Saturday sessions. The material covers critical business start-up basics like market research, finances, pricing, marketing, and many more ‘must-know’ concepts.The trainer is Bill Martin.

The series starts January 24th, 2012  from 6 – 9 pm Loyalist Lakeview Resort.

7.  Folk Dancing in Bonshaw January 15

Regular monthly Folk Dancing is at the Bonshaw Community Centre, 25 Green Road, on Sunday, January 15 from 2-4pm. Come learn folk dances from around the world, including circle dances and contra dances. No partner or experience is necessary—dances are called and easy. All ages are welcome. Bonshaw Ceilidh January 29

The monthly Ceilidh Concert at the Bonshaw Hall is set for 2-4 pm on Sunday, January 29th. We are very pleased to have The Hogan Family as our featured performers- sisters Carissa, Janessa and Angela join their father Ben with folk and traditional songs, fiddling and step dancing. We’ll also have local musicians, including Herbie MacDonald and Tony Reddin, plus a 50/50 draw, lunch, and open stage time. All ages are welcome. 8.  Identifying Your Beach Glass

Living from our unique selves is like finding blue beach glass. Everyone has the potential to find blue beach glass…It’s accessible to us all. (Finding Blue Beach Glass: A Book About Personal Transformation)

Archetypes can be compared to a seed. There is already a pattern encoded at an individual level that knows it will eventually turn into a tomato plant or petunia. How archetypes manifest at an individual level varies from person to person. Evidence of an archetype acting in our lives can be traced back throughout our lifespan. Its footprints are there if we look for them as it is activated in situations, life roles, and relationships. When our archetype is active in our lives, we feel more alive, grounded, centered, and empowered.

In this workshop, you will explore 12 of the most common vocational archetypes; discover 1-3 vocational archetypes that are dominate in your life; and develop practices/strategies for appreciating how they may manifest more specifically in your life.

9.  Violence Threat Assessment – Planning and Response
Halifax:  March 8

Without a clearly defined process to gather information and assess threats, violence prevention is extremely difficult. This workshop provides a communication and decision-making model to help businesses, schools, organizations and communities become more effective in their management of threats. Participants will learn strategies to help them identify, assess and manage individuals who may be escalating towards violence.

WORKSHOP FEE:  Early rate – $195 + HST;  Regular rate – $235 + HST

1.   Request for Proposals – Interministerial Women’s Secretariat Grant

The Interministerial Women’s Secretariat is issuing a request for
proposals for project funding for community organizations in PEI.  The
objective of the Interministerial Women*s Secretariat grant is to
provide project funding to:

  • support organizations that provide direct services and programs for the benefit of women in Prince Edward Island; and/or
  •  support projects that enhance awareness, education and social action on women*s legal, health, social and economic equality; and/or
  •  support the capacity of women*s organizations that promote women*s equality through advocacy, research and policy development.

This year’s focus is on the following three themes:

1. Social Media and girls
2. Human Trafficking of women and girls
3. Engaging male and female youth to reduce and prevent gender-based
violence

Preference will be made to projects that address the three focus
themes.
