Status of Women


1.  Conversation About Poverty in Canada and Prince Edward Island

Members of the PEI Working Group for a Livable Income are hosting an evening’s discussion on poverty issues, especially urban poverty, with guest speaker Senator Art Eggleton. Senator Eggleton was co-chair of the Senate committee that produced the major report on urban poverty in Canada entitled “In from the Margins: A Call to Action on Poverty, Housing and Homelessness.” He will speak about this report and take part in a discussion with Islanders who will share their perspectives on poverty on PEI and in Canada. PEI Senator Catherine Callbeck will participate and introduce her colleague, Senator Eggleton. PLEASE NOTE: The time of this event has changed as a result of a change in the Senator’s schedule.

2.   National Pap Campaign

In 2010 PEI the National Pap Campaign was able to reach out to 77 women on the PEI and provide screening for Cervical Cancer. This year they hope to reach out to more women and have expanded their Pap Examination sites to Charlottetown, Summerside, Montague, and O’Leary. The National Pap Campaign will to be held from October 25–28. The doctors have volunteered their time and medical practices to help the PEI Family Medicine Residents to run the Pap Campaign this year.

3.  2nd Annual Candlelight Vigil Against Homophobic and Other Forms of Bullying

The UPEI Rainbow Alliance presents the 2nd Annual Candlelight Vigil Against Homophobic and Other Forms of Bullying.  This event is meant to draw attention to the tragedy of young people who take their lives as a result of homophobic and other forms of bullying.   In Canada, suicide is the second highest cause of death for youth aged 10-24, with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth four times more at risk than their heterosexual peers.  Earlier this year, a study issued by the Journal of Pediatrics found that LBGTQ youth living in a social environment more supportive of gays and lesbians were 20 per cent less likely to attempt suicide than LGBTQ youth living in environments that were less supportive.  The vigil and events related to it, are an effort to let young people at risk know that they are not alone, and that they have support from their community.  Last year, over 300 people attended the vigil and made a commitment to take a stand against bullying in their communities.  It was empowering and moving.

In conjunction with the vigil, there will be a Free Purple Pancake Breakfast from 8:00-11:00 am on the morning of the 20th (WA Murphy Student Centre), and people are encouraged to wear purple throughout the day to celebrate the spirits of those who could not survive their torment.

It is tragic that many youth, with so much life before them, should feel it more preferable to die than to live with constant harassment and bullying. As a community, it is imperative that we let them know that we will stand with them and stand up for them.  It is simply the right thing to do.

Everyone is welcome.  Candles will be provided.  In case of inclement weather, the vigil will be held in McMillan Hall inside the WA Murphy Student Centre.  Our partners in this event include The UPEI Student Union, AIDS-PEI, UPEI Action Committee on Sexuality and Gender Diversity, UPEI Chaplaincy Centre, and the UPEI Diversity Office.

4.  Small Business Week 2011® Panel Discussion hosted by Canada Business

Small Business Week® 2011 is being held from October 16 to 22, 2011, across  Prince Edward Island. Canada Business will be hosting a Panel Discussion on Tuesday, October 18th at the Culinary Institute from 8:00AM to 10:30AM.  Discussion will focus on the successes and challenges in operating a small business in PEI. The Second Annual Evening of Wine and Song for Anderson House will be held at Harmony House Theatre on October 15, 2011, beginning with a reception at 7:00, followed by an auction and musical entertainment.

This is a black dress event for women only and performers for the evening include Catherine MacLellan, Chris Gauthier, Chas Guay, Katie McGarry  and Bridgette Blanchard and Allieanna Ballagh.

The goal of this event is to raise funds for the ongoing provision of services at Anderson House, the provincial emergency shelter for women and children who are experiencing abuse in their lives. Anderson House services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and provides confidential support and information.

WHY? An average of 90 women and 70 children use the services of Anderson House every year. We believe that they deserve a safe place that is also warm and inviting at a time when their world may feel like it has been turned upside down. The services offered at Anderson House are in highest demand during holidays like Christmas when so many of us are enjoying the warmth, love, support and abundances of the season. By supporting this cause, patrons will enjoy a wonderful evening out with other women – their mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. They will also be supporting Island women and children as they deal with major upheaval and trauma in their lives. By working together, we can make a difference for many!

2.   Free Documentary Screening Re Women in Leadership

The PEI Coalition for Women in Government is partnering with the UPEI Political Studies Society and Interministerial Women’s Secretariat to host a free public screening of Miss-Representation to mark Women’s History Month. Miss-Representation is a documentary about the difficulties for women to obtain leadership positions and for girls to reach their full potential.

“As the most persuasive and pervasive force of communication in our culture, media is educating yet another generation that a woman’s primary value lay in her youth, beauty and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader.”

The screening will take place October 19 from 7:00pm – 9:30pm at 242 MacDougal Hall, University of Prince Edward Island.

There will be free popcorn and beverages provided. Everyone is welcome. Doors open at 6:40 pm.

4.  Widening Embrace CD Launch

Atlantic Canada Gaia Singers and Carolyn McDade invite you to share in the launch of their newly released CD, Widening Embrace, on

October 23 at 2 pm at Park Royal United Church, in Charlottetown.

There is also a launch in Halifax on October 21, 7 pm, at St. Margaret’s of Scotland Anglican Church.

Widening Embrace is a project of singing, meditation, art, reflection that the Gaia singers of PEI and NS have participated in for the past year. Atlantic singers and artists joined singers from across Canada and the US to form a group of over 100 women to record this body of music at the Banff Centre in Alberta.

This music speaks of a deep love for earth and all beings. The singers describe the songs on the Album: “Each song arises from the energies of Creation, Earth, Universe, pulling us deep into the learning fields of forest, water, sky, stars.”

Accompanying the singing at the launch will be “All Beings Confluence,” a traveling art installation that invites all into conversation with the many “beings” with whom we share life on this earth. Profits from the CD launch will go to individuals, projects or organizations chosen, whose work is consistent with the principles of the Gaia Earth Charter —to advance respect and care for the community of life, to promote ecological integrity, to advance social and economic justice, to strengthen democracy, nonviolence and peace. 5.  First Annual George McRobie Lecture, at the Macphail Homestead

The First Annual George McRobie Lecture will be presented by Patrick Holden, CBE, at the Macphail Homestead on Monday, October 24th, beginning at 7:00 p.m., with a reception and cash-bar at 6:00. The title of Mr. Holden’s talk will be “Sustainable Food Systems for the 21st Century: The Challenge for Prince Edward Island.”

This special lecture series is named in honour of Dr. George McRobie, Patron for The Homestead Farm, the new sustainable agriculture component of the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead.

George McRobie has long been one of the world’s leading proponents of sustainable agriculture and appropriate, small-scale technology. He was a close friend and colleague of the radical economist E.F. Schumacher, whose landmark book /Small Is Beautiful /made such an impact in the latter part of the 20th century.More recently, McRobie has served as President of the Soil Association, Britain’s foremost farm organization promoting organic agriculture — with Prince Charles as Patron. Dr. McRobie has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Prince Edward Island, and is at present a part-time Islander, dividing the year between homes in London and Brackley Beach.

Patrick Holden is a noted international authority in the field of sustainable agriculture. Himself the operator of an organic dairy farm in Wales since 1973 — which now boasts a herd of 75 Ayrshire cows — Holden worked for 20 years with the Soil Association, during the last 15 of which he served as the Director.In 2010 he founded a new organization — The Sustainable Food Trust — with a mandate to provide a global voice for the Sustainable Food Movement.

6. Cinema Politica in October

In honour of World Food Day,  Cinema Politica Charlottetown and the PEI Food Security Network will present the documentary The Garden on Monday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m. in Lecture Theatre A of the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI.

About the Film:

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.

But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers. The film explores and exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

Please join us as twenty-three women from twenty Island organizations (including two members of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women and two of our staff) present the projects they  produced within the STEPS framework.

STEPS for Women is an umbrella project designed to develop leadership skills of women  supporting vulnerable populations in the province of Prince Edward Island in different capacities, and strengthen the problem solving skills of women in vulnerable groups. Each participant used  their interest-­based skills to plan, execute and evaluate a project that supports them to share their  knowledge and skills in communication and problem solving with vulnerable women in their  communities.
