On Tuesday, October 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the annual “Sisters In Spirit Vigil” will take place in Charlottetown, starting at Peakes Quay and proceeding to Province House. The PEI Advisory Council of the Status of Women offers our support to this annual Vigil. The purpose of the vigil is to remember and raise public awareness of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, with a goal of one day ending the violence against all women.
Young aboriginal women are five times more likely to die as a result of violence than other Canadian women of their age. Overall, Aboriginal women are almost three times more likely than non-aboriginal women in Canada to report having been a victim of a violent crime.
The Aboriginal Women’s Association of PEI, in conjunction with the Native Women’s Association of Canada, sponsors and organizes the vigil, and each year concerned citizens, community groups, and Aboriginal community members gather to remember and honour the many aboriginal women who are missing and those that have been murdered.
At this time we invite Islanders to show support and participate in the “Sisters in Spirit Vigil” this October 4.
