1. Municipal Campaign Training Workshop for Women
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is offering a municipal campaign training workshop for women in Summerside, PEI.
- September 25th and 26th, from 9 – 5, at Credit Union Place, Summerside, PEI
- People are asked to register, and there is a $50 fee

- Day1 will focus on campaign logistics, and Day 2 on communications and media relations.

Since 2005, FCM’s Standing Committee on Increasing Women’s Participation in Municipal Government has undertaken a number of initiatives, activities and programs to encourage women who are considering running for municipal office.
2. Bonshaw Ceilidh
Bonshaw’s Monthly Ceilidh is coming up Sunday evening September 26th from 7-9 at The Bonshaw Hall. This month features accordianist Ken Clark with Kevin Jesso, singer Doug Green as well as our local talent with Tiffany MacPhee, Jolene Willis’ group Whatchutalkinaboutwillis, and the Simmonds Family. There is open stage time, lunch, and a 50/50 draw. Admission is by donation with proceeds going to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Everyone welcome! 3. Child Restraint Safety Workshop
This two-day workshop is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills, on child restraint systems, to do one or more of the following:
* Help promote the importance and safe use of child restraints by those responsible for children.
- Respond to common questions on general child restraint use.
- Educate community partners (auto dealership employees, retailers, media, child care workers, etc.) on the importance of correct and consistent child restraint use.
- Raise awareness of colleagues on the importance and basic principles of correct child restraint use.

Child Restraint Refresher Course
This one day course is designed for those who have already taken the full workshop training.

4. Centre for Life-Long Learning Partnering with Inverlie Consulting to bring International Stress Management and Trauma Expert David Berceli, Ph.D to Charlottetown October 5, 2010
David Berceli will be presenting an open to the public workshop on Tension Release Exercises at Murphy’s Community Centre Tuesday, October 5 from 10am – 4:30pm.
Dr. Berceli has 15 years of experience in the area of trauma recovery, stress management and conflict resolution. He travels extensively in Europe and the United States training professionals and offering workshops to the public as well as working extensively with the US and Brazilian Military and world governments to assist in alleviating the stress impacts of war, world disasters and everyday living.
Tension Release Exercises will be of interest to you if you are:
* A Health professional including Counselors, Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Massage therapists, Yoga teachers
* Emergency and Military Personnel
* Fitness and lifestyle coaches, trainers and sports enthusiast
* Member of the general public who wants to learn a self-help technique for reducing stress
Tension Release Exercise (TRE) is a body centred process that releases deep chronic tension created during stressful or traumatic events. TRE is easily learned, immediately effective and self empowering as it can be used by most people without the guidance of a practitioner. TRE has the potential to assist stress saturated people to reduce their symptoms by teaching them a self-help relaxation tool.

5. Baby Steps – For You and Your Child!

6. Life Management Program
The Adventure Group will be hosting an information session for our upcoming Life Management Program.
This session of the Life Management Program is for single parents between the ages of 15 and 30.
It will be 18 weeks of life skills, and employability based skills, and parenting skills.
Classes will be Mon to Fri 9- 3:30 there will be a stipened wage of minimum wage for 30 hours per week.
We will be accepting 12 participants into the program.
The information session will be held Monday September 27, 2010 at 10:00am at Heartz Hall.
This session will provide applicants with information about the program, meet the facilitators, and fill out an application form, as well as set up an interview time.

7. Dr. Korman Conference 2010 : Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Working with Angry Youth and Families
Dr. Lorne Korman is a scientist at British Columbia Mental Health and Addiction Services, Research Director of the British Columbia Youth Concurrent Disorders Network, and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. He is a registered psychologist and received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from York University. Dr. Korman has authored publications on Dialectical Behavior Therapy and the treatment of borderline personality disorder, anger and addictions, gambling, emotion and change processes in psychotherapy.
At the conclusion of the conference:
1. Participants will be able to identify the basic functions and modes of DBT.
2. Participants will be able to list at least four strategies for increasing the commitment of adolescents to engage in treatment.
3. Participants will be able to identify three adaptations of DBT for working with adolescents and families.
4. Participants will be able to describe at least four common issues under lying anger problems.

1. Separation and Divorce Expo
Community Legal Information Association is hosting a Separation and Divorce Expo. Islanders will be able to meet service providers who can help when facing separation or divorce. Participants will be able to visit booths, listen to information sessions, and talk one-on-one with professionals.

2. 5th Annual Dikita Women’s festival
The Maritime Centre for African Dance (MCAD) was founded in 2005 and is an organization dedicated to teaching, sharing and promoting African Culture to children, youth and adults across Canada. To date, MCAD has taught well over 200,000 people in schools, community centres, camps and programs. MCAD was formed to address the lack of traditional cultural representation in the form of traditional dance in Canada. MCAD is a collective of individuals from the South, North, West and East of Africa who are trained in traditional dance.
MCAD Adult Troupe was recently most noted for being the only Canadian Group chosen to perform at President Obama’s African Inaugural Ball held in Washington, DC in January 2008.
The Maritime Centre for African Dance will be hosting its 5th annual Dikita International Women’s Festival, October 1st and 2nd at The Fredericton Arts and Learning Centre, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Festival is held for women and by women. This is a two day exploration of various forms of culture-specific dance addressing issues of dance as a vehicle for cross-cultural understanding, dance as a path for personal growth, dance as a means of social engagement and dance for wellness. The festival will feature women from all across the Maritimes, especially Nova Scotia.
On Friday, the Opening ceremonies, (for 2 hours), will include a panel of speakers from women’s organizations and the dance community alongside some local dance groups including Flamenco and African Dance. Saturday will include a warm up, classes in various forms of traditional dance and discussion groups. The workshops will be hosted by various artists schooled in African dance, miqmaq dance, yoga and more. Saturday evening will end with a dinner and dance for all the participants and their guests.
There is no age limit for the Dikita Women’s Festival. This event is open to all women of any age who are interested in learning about culture, and fosters a network of women from different socio economic backgrounds. MCAD has partnered with organizations such as the Elizabeth Fry Society and the Women’s Employment Centre among other community organizations to bring women from different backgrounds to attend this event. We are expecting 40 women to attend this event.
Dikita comes from the shone word, (from Zimbabwe, Southern Africa) meaning Sweat. Not only will this be an active weekend, but also educational and cultural weekend.

But before you go any further, it is crucial that you understand what IP really is. This presentation will introduce you to the basic principles of the Canadian IP system, administered for the most part by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), and will show you how IP can become your best ally when integrated into your business. Topics that will be covered are: Patents, Trade-marks, Copyrights, Industrial Designs and Integrated Circuit Topography.

Growing in Self-Confidence – Most of us feel that we never have enough confidence especially in certain situations and before certain persons. In this workshop we look at when we feel quite confident, and the areas where we want to become more confident and more self-assured. Date: Wed. Discovering the Core of My Identity – An insightful workshop that helps us to name and own aspects of ourselves that will increase our chances of making personal progress and discovering new meaning in our lives. This year I would ask you to PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! So I can have a better sense of what you want to take, and don’t end up cancelling something, that with a few more registrations, would have been a go. What I mean by early is, at the very least, 2 weeks prior to the workshop.
