2.    Bonshaw Ceilidh

Bonshaw’s Monthly Ceilidh is coming up Sunday evening August 29th from 7-9 at the Bonshaw Hall. Our regulars welcome special guests Ellen Blair and Jon Rehder, Doug Green, Lee Clarke, and singer-songwriter Silver Frith.
There will be a 50/50 draw, lunch, and open stage time.  Admission is by donation with this month’s proceeds going to the PEI Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. For more information please call 675-4282 or 675-4093.

3.    PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre is Looking for Board Members

The PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre is looking for persons interested in serving as Board members. Anyone in PEI who is over 18 years of age, a member of good standing in the community and who subscribes to the objects and principles of the Centre is eligible. 4.  Workshops in September

PRH Growth Group – Exploring My Inner World – This support group meets for seven sessions, beginning on Thurs. Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m. The rest of the dates will be confirmed at the first meeting. This series is open only to those who have had some previous experience of PRH workshops. Fee – The PRH Sliding Scale of Fees.


Moving From Grief to New Life – (For Men) – Grief is not something that only women have to work through. It is something that everyone human person experiences sometime in their lives. This workshop will help you in the process of dealing with grief and moving forward.  Dates: Sept. 17/18, Fri. 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. & Sat.  9:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.  Fee – The PRH Sliding Scale of Fees.


Growing in Self-Confidence – Most of us feel that we never have enough confidence especially in certain situations and before certain persons. In this workshop we look at when we feel quite confident, and the areas where we want to become more confident and more self-assured.  Date: Wed. Sept. 22, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Fee – The PRH Sliding Scale of Fees.


Discovering the Core of My Identity – An insightful workshop that helps us to name and own aspects of ourselves that will increase our chances of making personal progress and discovering new meaning in our lives. Dates: Five Thurs. beginning Sept. 30, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Fee – The PRH Sliding Scale of Fees.

This year I would ask you to PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! So I can have a better sense of what you want to take, and don’t end up cancelling something, that with a few more registrations, would have been a go. What I mean by early is, at the very least, 2 weeks prior to the workshop.

1.   Native Council of PEI Now Recruiting Volunteers for the “18th Annual Abegweit Pow Wow, August 20 – 22nd, 2010”

For the past 18 years, NCPEI has hosted the Annual Abegweit Pow Wow in Panmure Island at the Panmure Island Cultural Grounds. Thousands of visitors attend the two day festival to share in a celebration of Aboriginal culture and heritage on Prince Edward Island. Through drumming, dancing, story telling, artisan demonstrations and more, performers and visitors come together to unite in a memorable weekend of blending traditions and embracing the rich history of Aboriginal peoples.

To make this event possible, we need your help! Each year the staff and some of the members of the NCPEI work tirelessly to ensure the success of the Pow Wow. For the first time in the 18 year history of the Pow Wow, we have received funding through the Building Community Through Arts and Heritage Program from the Department of Canadian Heritage that allows us the opportunity to outreach to people like yourself and invite you to volunteer. We need help with everything from ensuring the performers have water to peeling vegetables in the kitchen. Transportation and meals will be provided as well as volunteer clothing. There will be a schedule developed that will be reviewed with volunteers prior to the pow wow to ensure that you can do what duties will be asked of you. The shifts will be 5-6 hours in length on the Pow Wow grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday shift will be from 10 – 4, Saturday & Sunday there will be two shifts –  10 – 3, 3 – 8. Please note that it is a 45 minute drive to and from the site that is not included in the shift. Overall we will be asking for 7-8 hours of your time. You can work one shift or the whole weekend if you wish. If you are not able to volunteer 6 hours then we will certainly try and accommodate what you can volunteer if you would like to be part of the Pow Wow. There will be free on-site camping (with your own gear) and volunteers will be given the opportunity to pick their sites on Friday. After the Pow Wow is finished, NCPEI will be hosting a volunteer recognition party to thank you for all your hard work!

2.  2010 Women in Business Symposium

3.   Women’s Worlds 2011


Are you engaged in research and/or advocacy relating to women’s equality, women’s rights, women’s empowerment?

Then you should know about Women’s Worlds 2011, a place where we can all connect and converse. The conversation includes you.

The 30th anniversary of this international and interdisciplinary global feminist conference will take place in Ottawa-Gatineau, Canada from 3-7 July of 2011.

Until September 15, 2010, we are accepting proposals from academia, the community level, and everywhere in between — groups, individuals, coalitions, networks, teams.

We hope you will ANSWER THE CALL.

This event will bring together academics, advocates, researchers, policy-makers, workers, activists, and artists of all ages from around the world under the theme “Inclusions, exclusions, and seclusions: Living in a globalized world”.

4.    Workshop on Legal and Leadership Fundamentals for Charities

The Voluntary Resource Council is offering a public legal education workshop for interested Board members, staff and volunteers of Island charities and non-profit organizations.

WORKSHOP: Legal and Leadership Fundamentals for Charities
Guest Speaker Richard Bridge is a charity lawyer based on the Annapolis Valley. You can read more about him at http://www.lawyerforcharities.

He will be presenting a 3-hour workshop on:

* The legal fundamentals of serving as a director of a charity or non-profit
* Good governance principles and practices

There will be time for questions and answers on a wide range of issues relating to charities and non-profits.

5.   PEI Status of Women Council Vacancy

Are you committed to women’s equality? Are you interested in bringing the equality issues and concerns of your community to government’s attention and in helping guide the PEI Status of Women Council in its work? This could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

In December 2010, three of nine Council member positions will be vacant. Government will appoint women to Council who have demonstrated a commitment to women’s equality who represent the regional, cultural, and ethnic diversity of PEI women, including groups such as women of colour, young, lesbian, Aboriginal, Francophone, low income, senior women or women with a disability.

Applications to sit on Council can be made through Participate PEI, administered by the Executive Council Office. Beginning September 2010, applications must be received 2 months before a vacancy. Applications are available on-line at or call the Executive Council Office at (902) 368-4502.  Participate in PEI’s website is . The PEI Status of Women Council works for equality and supports women’s full and active participation in social, legal, cultural, economic, and political spheres of life. The Council began in 1975 as an Order-In-Council. In 1988, it received full legislative standing with the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Act. It is an arms-length provincial government advisory agency, serving as a bridge between community and government. Council meets six times a year.

A visit to the Status of Women website at will give you a glimpse of some of the work the Council has been doing in recent years. In addition to making recommendations to government in policy and legislation to benefit the lives of Island women, girls and their families, Council initiates and participates in events and projects that benefit women.

One of Council’s most public initiatives is the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign, to raise awareness about violence against women and children. Council also partners with many groups including the Working Group for a Livable Income, the planning committee for International Women’s Day, the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention and the PEI Victim Services Advisory Board.
