3. Personnes aidantes des régions de Charlottetown, Rustico Souris et environs
Êtes-vous une personne qui offre des soins physiques ou du soutien à un proche ou à un membre de la famille atteint d’une maladie chronique (la vieillesse peut être acceptée) et ce, depuis au moins un mois? Êtes-vous la personne aidante principale? Êtes-vous âgé de 19 ans et plus? Est-ce que vous comprenez et vous parler le français? Êtes-vous une personne qui ne reçoit pas de salaire pour les soins physiques ou le soutien offert? Si oui, nous aimerions discuter de votre intérêt à participer à un projet de recherche, coordonné par l’Alliance des femmes de la francophonie canadienne en collaboration avec l’Université de Moncton, campus de Shippagan.
Ce projet de recherche vous permettra de participer à une intervention de groupe d’environ 8 à 12 personnes aidantes et d’une personne professionnelle pour animer les discussions. Cette intervention comportera 10 sessions de deux heures par session, soit une rencontre par semaine. Chaque session ou rencontre portera sur un thème spécifique qui touche le vécu ou les besoins des personnes aidantes.
L’objectif du projet de recherche est d’évaluer et comparer les effets de deux types d’intervention de groupe sur la compétence des personnes aidantes à prendre soin d’eux.
Le Collège Acadie Î.-P.-É. est à la recherche de personnes aidantes des régions de Charlottetown, de Rustico et de Souris et des environs pour participer à un groupe de soutien. Les thèmes dans ce type d’intervention seront déterminés par les participants, au fur et à mesure que les sessions seront offertes. Ce type d’intervention est orienté sur le partage entre les aidants, où l’animateur ou l’animatrice favorise la discussion entre les participants et les participantes.
Toutes les informations obtenues dans cette étude seront gardées confidentielles, de même que les noms des participants. Aucun nom ne sera écrit sur les questionnaires et sur les cassettes d’enregistrement. Lors de la publication d’articles scientifiques, seuls les résultats compilés seront présentés. On demandera aussi aux participants de garder confidentiel les noms des participants et leurs témoignages lors de ces rencontres.

5. Health Canada advisory on improper use of single-patient lancing devices
Health Canada is advising people who use single-patient blood lancing devices (also known as blood-sampling devices), which are usually used by diabetics to monitor blood glucose levels, not to use them in more than one person. Using these devices in more than one person poses a risk of transmitting serious blood-borne infections like hepatitis B and C and HIV.

Health Canada continues to receive reports of improper device use, including reports of individuals sharing their single-patient device with others, suggesting the need to increase awareness of this risk among device users.

3. Suzanne O’Callaghan Returns to Beanz Café with Exhibition
Suzanne O’Callaghan returns to Beanz Café in Charlottetown the first week of April with a new solo show of works celebrating women and spring on Prince Edward Island.
The exhibition of all new paintings is called “Danu” and features large, colourful works depicting the elements that the artist associates with rebirth, renewal and the end of winter in Atlantic Canada. Each painting will be accompanied by a short piece of verse or prose written by the artist describing the painting or piece, what inspired it and how it relates to how the artist experiences spring on the Island.
The works in the exhibition feature elements of spring and rebirth as pictorially represented by the activities of Islanders, from wpmen sustaining the Island’s fishers to women in cafes; through nature, from shells to gardens; and through the eyes of those people and places most loved by the artist, including a portrait of the artist’s son, Island fiddler Connor O’Callaghan (currently studying at Dalhousie University).

7. ATLANTIC SENIORS’ HOUSING NEEDS CONFERENCE
MOUNT SAINT VINCENT UNIVERSITY, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA
MAY 27-29, 2009
Initiated in 2004, the Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance (ASHRA) is a 5-year, federally funded project that encompasses all four Atlantic Provinces and includes representatives from five universities, seniors’ groups and other community-based organizations, housing developers and planners, service providers, and government departments.
The Conference is intended to bring together seniors’ groups and other community-based organizations; architects, housing developers, and planners; service providers; policymakers and government departments; academic researchers; and interested members of the general public.
The Atlantic Seniors Housing Needs Conference will feature an exciting combination of speakers, panels, and discussions. Five short films highlighting solutions from around the world for seniors housing will be premiered. Workshops will focus on the policy implications of these results on seniors’ housing.
Speakers will include ASHRA researchers and guests from both within Atlantic Canada and outside of the country.
• PLACES: How can building design and technology help people to age within their familiar communities?
• POLICIES: How can policy, rules, and regulations ensure access to safe and affordable housing for seniors?
• PEOPLE: How can we understand and prepare for the changing housing needs of aging Atlantic Canadians?
The Conference will include workshops that are set up to assist participants with examining policy barriers, and to facilitate the development of recommendations and policy solutions designed to meet seniors’ housing needs.
INTERNATIONAL “AFFORDABLE SENIORS HOUSING IDEAS DESIGN COMPETITION” will be taking place at the conference, and will be judged by a panel of experts from within and outside of Canada.
