Professional writing-workshop facilitator from ‘Down Under’ offers two workshops for writers

Dr. Lynda Hawryluk, a writer, lecturer, and facilitator of popular writing workshops in Australia, will present two writing workshops in Charlottetown June 16 and 17, co-sponsored by the Institute of Island Studies, UPEI Department of English, and PEI Writers’ Guild. The Saturday workshop, entitled ‘Writing the Island,’ is for writers of any level or genre interested in ‘writing place’ from the island perspective. The Sunday workshop, called ‘Running a Successful Writing Workshop,’ is open to everyone who teaches writing, either in a workshop setting or in the classroom. Both will be held at the UPEI Faculty Lounge from 1 to 4 p.m.

The ‘Writing the Island’ workshop offers a special bonus feature: participants will be encouraged to present their work in public at a reading called “Writing the Island: The Readings.” The readings will take place on Tuesday evening, June 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Confederation Centre Public Library. Emceed by Lynda, the reading is free of charge, and everyone is invited to attend.

The cost for Writers’ Guild members is $15 for one workshop, or $25 for both; and for non-members is $25 for one and $40 for both. For information, or to register, please call Laurie at (902) 569-5268 or e-mail laurie.brinklow@gmail.com

About the workshop, ‘Writing the Island,’ June 16

Islands are places that intrigue mainlanders. They loom large on the horizon, carry secrets and memories on their shores, and are only islands if you look at them from the water. Once on islands, other landscapes become less important; such is their appeal. How we write about islands of all kinds is the focus of this workshop. We will explore islands both familiar and otherwise through our writing, using descriptive prose or imagery-rich poetry.

About the workshop, ‘Running a Successful Writing Workshop,’ June 17

Writing workshops have been steadily growing in popularity for many years, ranging from small-group community workshops to commercially run seminars and conferences. This workshop provides coordinators and keen writers alike with professional development opportunities to enhance and add value to your workshop experience. Practical methodologies and organizational tips and techniques will demonstrate how to make the most of your venue, materials and provide valuable writing experiences for participants.

About ‘Writing the Island: The Reading,’ June 19

The public is invited to share the results of a multi-genre writing workshop held on Saturday, June 16, called ‘Writing the Island.’ Hosted by professional writing-workshop facilitator Dr. Lynda Hawryluk, the reading features workshop participants reading from work that is bound to be rich in island imagery and story. Because the workshop is open to all levels of writing experience, the reading will feature authors both known and unknown to Island audiences. Indeed, for some, this will be their first time in front of an audience.

The reading, emceed by Lynda Hawryluk, will be held at the Confederation Centre Public Library June 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

About Lynda Hawryluk

Dr. Lynda Hawryluk is a Lecturer in Literary and Cultural Studies at Central Queensland University in Australia, where she teaches undergraduate creative writing subjects and supervises Masters of Letters and PhD students. Lynda has been coordinating the Idiom 23 Writers’ Workshops on North Keppel Island since 2005 and has facilitated many writing workshops in the Central Queensland region. She is the Deputy Chair of the Australasian Association of Writing Programs and has been published in a variety of academic and creative publications.

Lynda will also be a featured reader Thursday, June 14, at “Poles Apart: Writing the Antipodes,” at the UPEI Main Building Faculty Lounge; and has been invited, along with Laurie Brinklow, to be Poet Laureate at PEI’s PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy sponsored by the Literacy Alliance June 15 at the Belvedere Golf and Country Club.

7.  Documentary Film

The Island chapter of the Breaking the Silence Network will be presenting Pamela Yates’ most recent documentary film

“Granito: How to Nail a Dictator”

Monday, June 18th at 7 p.m.
in the Fellowship Room at Park Royal United Church, 11 Christie Drive in Sherwood.

This film has been described as one of the most compelling, and inspiring documentaries of the year.  It is about the ongoing efforts to bring to trial Rios Montt, a Guatemalan dictator and military commander responsible for genocide of indigenous peoples in that country. Pamela Yates first 1982 acclaimed film about the civil war in Guatemala, “When the Mountains Tremble,” included footage of the military struggle in Guatemala from the camps of both the military government and the insurgents. Twenty years later unused footage for that film surfaced to provide evidence necessary for conviction in court of Rios Montt and helped determine the course of a crucial human rights investigation.

“Granito: How to Nail a Dictator” documents how evidence is being collected for the court case from diverse sources including survivors, an anthropologist, a lawyer and from Pamela’s own film reels from the 80’s. “Granito” means “a grain of sand” and is used in the title of the documentary to reflect how many small contributions , when combined , can result in a powerful result.

Entrance will be by donation. There will also be a silent auction and some Guatemalan refreshments.

7. Elder Abuse Community Awareness Grant

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15), the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat is encouraging community organizations to become involved in raising awareness of this important issue that affects neighbours, friends and families across PEI. To support your efforts, the Secretariat is pleased to offer community groups a contribution towards your community awareness project.

What is the Elder Abuse Community Awareness Grant?
Elder abuse is a serious and often under reported problem in communities. The abuse of older adults is defined as any action or inaction by another person that causes harm or threatens to cause harm to an older adult. This includes financial abuse, neglect, physical abuse, emotional and verbal abuse and sexual abuse.

The good news is that there is help for people who are experiencing abuse and there are steps that neighbours, friends and family members can take to help support someone who may need help. The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat hopes that by increasing community awareness activities we can work together to raise awareness of this important issue.

How much can we apply for?
Your community group can apply for up to $250. In total the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat has budgeted to distribute up to $5,000 across the province for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2012.

Who can apply for a grant?
Any non-profit organization, community-based coalition, network, municipal government, band/tribal council and other Aboriginal organizations in Prince Edward Island can apply. If you are not sure if you qualify, please call 620-3785.

When is the deadline to apply?
Applications will be accepted until 5:00pm May 31, 2012.

For the rest of the criteria and/or to get an application or if you have any questions or want to discuss your ideas for an awareness activity, please call 620-3785, toll-free 1-866-770-0588 or email seniors@gov.pe.ca

4. Honouring our Differences: Gender and Diversity Analysis

The PEI Interministerial Women’s Secretariat has developed a guide on Gender and Diversity Analysis that is available on their website. Honouring our Differences: Gender and Diversity Analysis has been developed to promote use and understanding of Gender and Diversity Analysis (GDA) tools. Historically, research and product development, and much policy development, relied on able-bodied white male experience as a norm. It was assumed that “one size fits all” when it came to products, policies or programs. The use of GDA reveals more than a few surprises about the value added when differences in male and female – and diverse – experiences are taken into account.

Gender and Diversity Analysis (GDA) refers to the process of giving attention to how gender and diversity affect the experiences, behaviours and needs of women and men. Further, it looks at how to accommodate these differences and needs.

Community members and groups can use GDA so that their policies, their actions in the community and their recommendations to government can better look ahead to potential effects. Using GDA can increase the chances that proposed actions have the intended results for men, for women and for all diverse populations.

Women of Summerside March to Support Safe Parks

Summerside March

The East Prince Women’s Information Centre (EPWIC) is pleased to announce a women’s march to support safe parks. The March for Safety is in response to increased vandalism in Summerside parks. Members of the public are encouraged to gather at 9 pm on May 3 at Legere Park to join the March.

Andy Lou Somers, Executive Director at EPWIC says the March will raise awareness of women’s safety in city parks.
“Our organization decided to spearhead the Women’s March for Safety after the Heritage Park Memorial [to the 14 women massacred in Montreal] was vandalized. We realized that it was a short step from vandalism to endangering women. The March, which includes three city parks, will demonstrate that women – and those that love them – care about their safety in the parks.”

Somers, who sits on the city’s Crime Prevention Committee, says there was full support from fellow committee members, several promising to attend. She chose May 3 for the event, as the following day schools are closed, giving school age girls an opportunity to experience a unique, empowering event.

The March will take place on Thursday, May 3, starting at Legere Park (Participark) playground at 9 pm, follow Summer Street to Queen Elizabeth Park and finish at the Heritage Park, less than 1km. Marchers are encouraged to bring a friend and a flashlight. Those who wish to show their support, but not march are invited to join the event at Heritage Park at the Women’s Memorial. Men are encouraged to join the March to show their support.

1.  May Day Event Being Planned – From Kathie Harris

On May 1, workers from around the world come together at demonstrations, marches, and rallies to discuss political/economic problems and to demand government accountability in resolving them. Within Canada, the list of things to worry about is growing at an unbelievable rate: there is building evidence that our election was severely tampered with via a Robo-Calling Scam; we are experiencing a massive set of cuts to social welfare programs including C@P sites, addictions treatment, rehabilitation programs, and Indigenous health-care; the approval of mass cuts to important pillars of society such as the CBC and Elections Canada; the introduction of massive layoff programs such as at Veterans Affairs, Health Canada, and Employment Insurance processing centers. All of this is being done with seemingly NO consideration of negative impacts such as how these shifts impact quality of life and accessibility of services. Despite justifying these cuts through the language of ?austerity?, federal and provincial governments continue to invest tax dollars into unnecessary programming/infrastructure such as a series of rolling hills in Borden, construction of several jails (despite low crime rates), the operation of an internet surveillance network that severely threatens Canadian privacy (proposed), and the purchasing of fighter-jets to name a few. They also habitually ignore issues of land-use and withdraw support from environmental protection and management programs.

Despite wide-scale reactions from Canadians, federal and provincial governments seem to have heeded little attention to the ever-growing number of protests, petitions, emails and phone-calls directed to them by concerned citizens asking them to act on our behalf in Parliament and Legislature. In this sense, the concerns of everyday Canadians are continuously being brushed off by the very officials we have elected to work on our behalf (although at this point, Robo-Gate throws even the issue of whether that is a valid statement).

The purpose of this rally is TO JOIN TOGETHER AS ISLANDERS AND CANADIANS TO DEMAND FAIR REPRESENTATION AND CONSIDERATION FROM OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.

Please join us in front of Province House on Tuesday, May 1 from 4:00-5:30 for a Mayday/May Day Prince Edward Island rally where we will come together and voice issues that matter to us as Islanders and Canadians. The purpose of this rally is to demand that our officials begin acting for us, the people whom they were elected to represent. Transparency, accountability, and discussion are important parts of democratic society and we believe that they are brought back into the political process, provincially and federally.

5. Call for Nominations for Outstanding Volunteers

April 13th, 2012- April 15 to 21, 2012 marks the 70th annual National Volunteer Week which pays tribute to the millions of volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy to Canadian communities. Volunteers are crucial to a healthy, vital community. The province of Prince Edward Island is unique; our voluntary organizations do more with less funding, and less paid staff than any other province. Volunteers and non-profit organizations offer countless services to thousands of Islanders that would not otherwise be available.

To celebrate volunteers and what they offer to the community, the Voluntary Resource Council (VRC) of PEI is inviting nominations for outstanding volunteers. The work of the VRC is to support and build capacity amongst voluntary organizations in PEI.

Non-profit organizations and associations in Prince Edward Island are invited to nominate an outstanding volunteer for special recognition. The selected outstanding volunteers will be recognized at the Voluntary Resource Council’s annual Breakfast Gala to be held in October.

Nominations should include: the name and contact information of the volunteer and the organization/association, the mission of the organization/association, and a description of the contributions of this individual.

Nominations can be submitted by email to vrc@eastlink.ca, or by mail to Voluntary Resource Council, 81 Prince Street, Charlottetown, PEI C1A 4R3. The deadline for nominations will be June 15th, 2012.

The PEI Working Group for a Livable Income regrets that it is forced to CANCEL the forum on guaranteed annual income planned for Tuesday, April 24.

2.  PEI’s Pro-Choice Movement to Hold ‘Speak-Out’

Thursday, April 26th
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The Guild, corner of Queen and Richmond Street, Charlottetown
Light refreshments provided. Donations accepted at the door.

On Thursday, April 26th at 7pm, the PEI Abortion Rights Network is holding a ‘Speak-Out’ at the Guild, in Charlottetown. PEI Women of many different ages will share their experiences with reproductive choice. Focusing on abortion and the morning after pill, the intention of this event is to change the culture of shame and silence around these topics through the act of storytelling.

Speak-Outs have played an important role in the history of the Pro-Choice movement as powerful events that break the culture of fear and shame that serve to silence women. Of particular note is the Redstocking Speak-Out that disrupted the 1969 New York Legislative hearing about abortion which was to include only twelve men and a catholic nun as speakers.

According to a spokesperson for the PEI Abortion Rights Network, the Speak-Out is highlighting both the lack of abortion access on PEI and the regressive politics surrounding  a debate taking  place on the same day in the federal legislature. The Conservative-initiated debate on the personhood of a fetus is taking place despite Prime Minister Harper’s election promise that the Conservatives would not open the abortion debate while he was prime minister.

“This ‘Speak-Out’ is PEI women’s response to the federal debate. We are saying this is not a theoretical debate, and this is not an excuse to play politics. This is about our lives.”

Event Details:
Following up on a successful event in Halifax last year, Chris Flett is touring Atlantic Canada again, and will be in Charlottetown on Thursday April 26, 2012.  Chris Flett will be speaking on “What Men Don’t Tell Women in Business”, based on his best selling book.  This event is being presented in partnership with RBC, Heather Wilson International, momcafé, and platform for women.

We would love for you to forward the invitation to anyone else you feel might be interested.  It is a great chance for women to get together and really connect.

Charlottetown business women will have two opportunities to hear Chris speak.  He will be leading an intensive morning session along with PEI native Tasha Richard of the Ghost CEO Women’s Leadership Program.  This half-day session brings to light the three fundamentals for any professional woman looking to advance her career:

1)    Having a clear big picture and plan for their career
2)    Understanding how to increase professional value (reputation, quality of contacts, and unique skills & expertise) throughout their career
3)    Building a powerful business network that produces clients, opportunities, and support

When participants leave the room, they will have at their disposal, some of the most powerful planning tools known to the industry. These tools will be relevant now and throughout their careers.

As well, in the afternoon we have the privilege of hearing Chris Flett, author of “What Men Don’t Tell Women in Business” give a very special keynote address. During this session Chris will share with participants an authentic Alpha Male’s account of what has happened to business in the last 40 years, what drives Alpha Males in business, and the ways that professional women unknowingly give up their power in business to men. This discussion covers all the things men discuss at the water cooler, in the locker room, and in the board room when women aren’t present. Participants should come prepared for a truthful look inside the Alpha Male’s playbook of business.

1.  People First Film Night

Wednesday, April 18th
7:00 to 9:00
Community Connections, 701 Water Street,  Summerside

The Summerside People First group is hosting an evening of films and discussion on Wednesday, April 18th, from 7:00 to 9:00, at Community Connections, 701 Water Street West in Summerside.

Since 1999, members of the People First group have been making films to tell their stories and draw attention to the issues that affect men and women with intellectual disabilities. Several of the films feature the People First Theatre Troupe, performing original plays written and directed by Vian Emery. The plays, and the films, are about independence, institutions, violence prevention and the rights of men and women with intellectual disabilities. In 2010 People First made a film to tell the story of the Freedom Tour – a province-wide series of public events and rallies aimed at raising awareness of the right of men and women with intellectual disabilities to make their own choices and decisions about where and with whom they will live.

People First members from Summerside will introduce the films and there will be refreshments and time for discussion afterwards. This is a free event – everyone is welcome.
