5.   EPWIC Hosting Public Information Sessions

Media Release
June 29, 2009

Re: Public Information Sessions

The East Prince Women’s Information Centre is hosting public information sessions in October/2009 on various topics related to budgeting, money management, credit counselling, financial services and programs available for low income and seniors; and, how to choose when you start your Canada Pension- 60 or 65?

Coordination of these sessions, creating a resource booklet, and website resource upgrades are part of a project the Women’s Centre is presently working on.  This project has been funded by the Prince Edward Island Interministerial Women’s Secretariat.

This project aims to address barriers faced by women on PEI when seeking help with finances, budgeting, credit and setting priorities.  The goal of the project is to empower women needing assistance with their financial situations to take action and responsibility for themselves and their families.  The objective is to increase awareness and access to resources and services to assist women in making informed decisions by overcoming barriers they face related to their lack of knowledge about financial matters and programs available to them.

EPWIC realized the need for these resources to be offered and felt that by providing qualified professionals for learning sessions and guidance on these matters is necessary for women of this area.  EPWIC will then put together all the resources available in one resource booklet and website that will be available by the end of the project (March 31, 2010).

The requested sessions will provide information on: how to manage your money, credit, budgeting, bankruptcy (is there any other choices), programs/grants for low incomes re: home improvements, deferred property taxes for seniors, Canada Pension (how do I decide when to take it 60 or 65?)

If anyone is interested in these sessions please call or email.

Dates and times will be announced by September 14, 2009.

6.  Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the 30th Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case.

The awards were instituted by the Governor General in 1979 to honour the 50th anniversary of the “Persons Case” and the five Alberta women whose determination led to a landmark victory in the struggle by Canadian women for equality. The Famous Five achieved not only the right for women to serve in the Senate, but also paved the way for women to participate in other aspects of public life.

“Equality for women and their full participation in society are important for women, their families, their communities and our country. More than ever before, we need women leaders of all ages to help keep our country strong, economically, socially and democratically,” said Minister Guergis. “The Government of Canada is proud to recognize those who work to promote the equality of girls and women in Canada. Recipients of these awards continue the tradition of dedication and determination that the Famous Five inspired to enrich their communities.”

Five awards in addition to one Youth Award are presented annually to candidates chosen from across Canada. To be eligible for nomination, candidates must be Canadian citizens over 30 years of age, or between 15 and 30 years of age for the Youth Award.

3.  USC Shine a Light Campaign

http://shinealight.wusc.ca/

Education is a powerful tool and without it few of us would reach our full potential. In refugee camps very few girls have the opportunity to pursue their education beyond primary school and without education these young people have no way out.

For over 30 years, the WUSC Student Refugee Program has been providing opportunities for young refugees to pursue higher education in Canada. Among the students sponsored by WUSC, men greatly outnumber women because few girls finish high school. This is a situation they aim to change.

Expected to help with domestic chores and the care of siblings, the girls in the camps often miss school or discontinue their studies altogether. Many girls can only find time to study after dark in camps that lack electricity. The first phase of our campaign focuses on raising money for safe, cost-effective solar lamps to enable girls to study at night. Once we’ve reached our goal of providing 1000 girls with access to solar-powered lamps, your donations will help the girls obtain remedial training to make up the schooling they missed out on, provide them with needed school supplies and finally offer scholarships for promising young refugee girls in Kenya and Malawi.

WUSC is working to Shine a Light on what girls can achieve if they overcome the challenges they face in accessing education in the refugee camps. With the help of many, they are planning to provide these girls with the tools they need to learn, to strive, and to succeed.

Watch for local fundraising events to raise awareness and funds about the Shine a Light project.

2.   New Website Signals Countdown to Global Feminist Conference

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
17 June 2009, Ottawa

Today’s launch of www.womensworlds.ca – a trilingual website devoted to a 2011 global feminist event – signals the start of a countdown to what will likely be the largest women’s conference in Canada’s history: Women’s Worlds 2011 (WW 2011).

“Inclusions, Exclusions, and Seclusions: Living in a Globalized World” is the theme of the international and  interdisciplinary gathering of and about women to be held in Ottawa-Gatineau, Canada from July 3-7, 2011.

The event will convene a diversity of minds and experiences to delve into some of the most pressing issues of our time. Outreach is underway to draw a rich cross-section of people from around the world into the conversation – from academics to activists and researchers to policy-makers.

In the lead-up to the gathering, the website will serve as a hub where people from around the world can connect and converse on issues related to globalization and women’s equality, and more. To stoke that conversation, organizers will roll out a range of interactive components and unveil content and registration information as it becomes available. Site visitors
are encouraged to sign up for e-bulletins to receive up-to-the-minute information about website content and the conference.

This online portal is part of a broader new media strategy that organizers hope will attract unlikely participants to the conference and related discussions, a key conference objective being to encourage intergenerational exchange.

WW 2011 organizers also plan on using social media like facebook, flickr, youtube, and twitter to stimulate connections and conversations.

Ottawa-Gatineau plays host to this 11th edition of Women’s Worlds – a triennial global women’s conference most recently held in Madrid in 2008 and Seoul in 2005 – with the University of Ottawa and Carleton University partnering as lead coordinators.

3. Factory Atlantic Theatre Workshop

Factory Atlantic a theatre collective and institute for theatre exchange announces a ten week intensive workshop in advanced scene study at the wHy Loft; Sunday evening from 5-9 pm beginning June 21. The cost of the workshop is $100 and enrollment is limited.  For more information please inquire: factoryatlantic@gmail.com.

Factory Atlantic seeks to develop a collective of theatre artists established on the principle of ensemble development. Traditional theatre formation is often restricted by an over emphasis on commercial results.  This focus not only affects the quality of performance it impinges the opportunity for exchange, education, and revaluation of short term economic goals.

The Factory’s attention on education and exchange presupposes ascribing value to an affirmative predisposition toward our
collaborators, neighbors and international partners – and most importantly to the process of theatre creation itself.

Within this environment the following actions are envisioned:

*    Ensemble performance is rehearsed
*    Ensemble performance is presented
*    Professional actors serve as the core
*    Students and community members are associated
*    Artists from other disciplines collaborate
*    Artists from other disciplines exhibit
*    The ensemble teaches
*    Artists from other disciplines teach
*    Teachers learn
*    Lectures and symposia are held
*    International artists perform, teach, and learn

Grotowski, Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Brecht  and others all understood the power of group association when developing work.  However, all of them were quite protective of their companies and the process utilized to create performance.  Factory Atlantic seeks to broaden the effect of ensemble theater construction beyond an insular notion of ‘group’. ‘Group’ for Factory Atlantic includes community.

Factory Atlantic is an educational forum. The ensemble develops large long term theatrical work.  The company is made up of established working actors and regional actors.  Interns also contribute as do members of the local community.  A natural byproduct of this endeavor is the effect on associates.

For more information please inquire: factoryatlantic@gmail.com.

6. Eating Between the Lines

A team of early childhood researchers at UPEI have created a wonderful on-line resource for early childhood educators to use with the children in their centres. This resource – Eating Between the Lines – was created to foster an interest in nutrition issues and food awareness in a fun and information environment while emphasizing early literacy. This resource also offers many activities that parents can do with their
children at home.

Eating Between the Lines was created with kindergarten children but any of the activities can be adapted to work with all young age groups.

Check out the website at www.ebtl.org and have fun.

“The End of the Line”
When: Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m.
Where: Don and Marion McDougall Hall, University of Price Edward Island
What: Screening hosted by Environmental Coalition of PEI and Greenpeace Canada. Questions and discussion will follow the film with Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Sarah King. Admittance is by donation

Film synopsis
The End of the Line is the first major feature documentary film to reveal the impacts of overfishing on our oceans. In the film, we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. It examines the imminent extinction of species such as the bluefin tuna; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation. The film calls attention to consumers who innocently buy endangered fish, politicians who ignore the advice and pleas of scientists, fishermen who break quotas and fish illegally, and the global fishing industry that is slow to react to an impending disaster.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans. Filmed across the world, featuring top scientists including well-known Canadians such as Boris Worm and Daniel Pauly, indigenous fishermen and fisheries enforcement officials, The End of the Line is a wake-up call to the world. The film concludes with solutions that are simple and doable, but emphasizes that political will and activism are crucial to solve this international problem. Greenpeace’s campaign
Greenpeace launched a sustainable seafood campaign a year ago aimed at transforming Canada’s retail sector into one that ensures only sustainable seafood is bought and sold. Greenpeace is calling on the eight largest supermarket chains to adopt a strong sustainable seafood policy, remove seafood species from sale that come from harmful fishing and aquaculture practices as found on Greenpeace’s Redlist, and improve seafood product labelling to enable consumers to make more informed decisions about the seafood they buy.

Sarah King is the oceans campaigner for Greenpeace based out of Vancouver, B.C. She grew up in New Brunswick, spending lots of time in P.E.I. and Cape Breton by the sea, and has always been very interested in marine conservation. Sarah completed a masters in environmental applied science and management, focusing her study on the cumulative impacts of salmon farms in southwestern New Brunswick.

NEW LISTINGS THIS WEEK

1. World Renowned Urban Planner to Give Talk

Larry Beasley, one of the world’s top contemporary urban planners, will be in Charlottetown to give a talk on the elements of a sustainable city focusing on the essential contribution made by open space at the regional, local, street, and project level.

The talk, which is hosted by the Friends of the Farm, will be on May 25th at 7:00 pm in the lecture theatre of the School of Business, UPEI.

Mr. Beasley who retired as Vancouver’s director of planning in 2006 was instrumental in transforming that city into one of the most livable cities in the world. During his years in Vancouver, he helped raise millions of dollars from the private sector for civic projects, led the revitalization of neighbourhoods, and developed a strong heritage preservation program. Presently, he is the Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning at the University of British Columbia and the founding principal of Beasley and Associates, an international planning consultancy specializing in land use planning and urban design. He chairs the National Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Realty of Ottawa’s National Capital Commission and regularly advises other Canadian municipalities and numerous cities worldwide, such as Abu Dhabi, Dallas, and Rotterdam.

Mr. Beasley’s emphasis is on sustainable planning and the best use of natural attributes such as green space. He maintains that building things is only one aspect of urbanism. Good cities require good spaces and respect for the spirit of place. Form in design has to suit the people, the environment, the circumstances, and the tradition of a place. It has to feel organic.

Mr. Beasley has been recognized with numerous awards for architecture, city planning and landscape design. In 1996 the United Nations honoured Beasley’s work among the “World’s 100 Best Planning Practices”, in 2003 the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada conferred on him its Medal of Excellence as Advocate for Architecture and in 2007 he received the Kevin Lynch Award for MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
