Persons Day marks an important legal victory for women. On October 18, 1929, the English Privy Council overturned a Supreme Court of Canada decision and declared that women were legally “persons,” and therefore eligible for appointment to the Senate. The case paved the way for the eventual legal recognition of all women across the country. While Persons Day is a celebration, it is also an occasion to reflect upon the ongoing struggle to achieve equality for Canadian women.

8. National “Take Our Girls to Vote” Campaign
The PEI Coalition for Women in Government is supporting a national initiative launched by Equal Voice, an organization which encourages the election of women in Canada. “Take Our Girls to Vote” asks Canadians to consider taking a young girl in their life to the polls
with them on Election Day.
“The purpose of the campaign is to address the issue of low voter participation in younger voters and nurture political interest in young girls,” says Kirstin Lund, co-ordinator of the PEI Coalition for Women in Government. “Teaching girls to value voting will assist in ensuring that as women, they feel entitled to participate in all levels of the electoral process, from voting to running for office.”
National voter apathy has been an issue among all ages, with voter turnout at 63 per cent in the 2006 federal election. Young voters turn out at an even smaller percentage. Elections Canada statistics show that in 2006, 44 per cent of eligible voters age 18 to 24 cast ballots, up from 37 per cent in 2004. In PEI, the percentage of voters aged 18-24 in the 2006 federal election was 52%, significantly lower than the PEI voter turnout for all
ages of 74%.
Equal Voice, along with its partners, The Dominion Institute, Girl Guides of Canada, TakingITGlobal, Student Vote, and YWCA Canada, is encouraging Canadians to support the campaign by registering on-line at http://www.equalvoice.ca/pledge.cfm.
