3. Girl Greatness Starts Here – and we need your help
Girl Guides of Canada is the largest women’s organization in the country – there are almost 135,000 Guiding Members, and more than 26,000 of these are adult members.
We need more of these adult members, and we need more than Leaders. Many women do not realize this, but our adult members take part in a wide range of roles. Girl Guides on PEI is especially interested in women who can work at the provincial level and help by things like sitting on a committee, help organize for special events, or volunteer their time at the Girl Guide store. We can help find the role that best suits you, your skills and your availability. It doesn’t take a lot of time – we value all commitments from our members. We would like to encourage Island women to become involved in whatever way they can.
As you can see, Guiding is not just for girls – it’s for adults, too. If you would like to join us, please contact Girl Guide Headquarters at 894-4936, toll free at 1-800-565-8111, or by email at joinnow@girlguides.pe.ca.

Each poster will have the slogan “I stand with you to end violence against women and children.”
Why: We know that most men are not violent towards the women in their lives. We would like to give men the opportunity to take a stand with women against violence. What: The 8-1/2” by 11” posters will be featured on the Status of Women blog website throughout November and December and will be displayed during a tribute to mark the National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence Against Women at the Confederation Centre on Friday, December 5, 2008.
How To participate:
· send a head-and-shoulders or upper body photo to the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women
· photos sent by email to peipurpleribbon@eastlink.ca should be in a high-quality jpeg format. Unfortunately, we will only be able to include submissions that meet the technical requirements.

· include name, occupation, and place of residence.
When: Deadline for submissions is Monday, December 1, 2008.

National Coalition of Advisory Councils on the Status of Women Meets

Welcoming dinner meeting for representatives from PEI, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut Advisory Councils on the Status of Women.

At a Persons Day tea at the Famous Five monument on Parliament Hill, the PEI delegation, and Neevee from Nunavut.
Report Card: Mentioning Women
Our Analysis:
Women are mentioned rarely, if ever, in the Speech from the Throne, the Budget Address, or other key statements of public policy. This is nothing new, but there are few signs of it changing. Going forward, it will be important for government to take women into account when planning for economic development.
The “Prosperity Agenda,” with its focus on science and technology, promises great
development for the Island. But careful planning will be needed to make sure women benefit equally from this strategy, since there’s already a gap between women and men in education in some sciences and some aspects of technology. As a province, we have to make sure the gap between men’s and women’s wages isn’t deepened.
Highlighting “Rural Development” in a revamped department is a potentially positive step for community-based economic development. Efforts to revitalize rural PEI must meaningfully include women. Many rural communities have suffered due to outmigration of men. It is often women who are left behind to take care of the family and community. The province needs to engage the caring, commitment, and creativity of its rural women.
This is an excerpt from the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women 2008 Equality Report Card for PEI, released in June 2008 and based on information updated to May 30, 2008.
